Churches get so caught up is humanistic marketing techniques that we forget that <b>Jesus Christ</b> promised to build <b>HIS</b> church. The Seeker-Sensitive movement and other church growth paradigms put us in the position of doing the Lord's work. It's interesting that, as you point out, the early church just focused on the relationship. The only thing I might caution against is that we don't take 'Going Deeper' as a means to another end (producing the Lord's favor). Going Deeper is the end, right? The fact that God grew the early church from 120 to 3,000 because they devoted themselves doesn't mean we should expect a 25-fold increase of membership. God dispenses his blessings as he wills.
